ABSTRACT:      The origin of Soutomaior, bounded to Paio Méndez Sorrende, dates back to the time of Alfonso II, in the 12th century. However, there are not written documents that can prove this statement. However, its importance, and relation with important events in the course of the Galician history, has to be found in the last years of the Middle Ages. The greatest moment of splendour of the castle, takes place with Pedro Madruga (Valle, 1990). Since the reign of the Catholic Kings, Galician fortress will experience a gradual change of meaning and function, becoming residential and agricultural spaces instead of the military and defensive function (Rodríguez Dacal & Izco, 1994); the adequate environmental and soil conditions of the area for agricultural production, undoubtedly facilitated this transformation.
