ABSTRACT:      In our region we regard the camellia as an ornamental plant with an amazing winter blooming, but most species belonging to this genus are not ornamental species, some of them are cultivated for their leave in commercial production, this is the case of Camellia sinensis, worldwide known as the tea plant; for years this was the only economic value of the genus; however, at present the commercialization of this plant as an ornamental is very important. Cunningham, Kaempfer and others, in their travels to the east, described the plants observed, which aroused people interest in the introduction and propagation of these exotic plants. Some were brought by sailors of the East India Company or by famous botanists such as Robert Fortune, C. Parks, Forest, or even by missionaries, that designated the oldest camellia cultivars.
