ABSTRACT: The special conditions of the Rías Baixas estuary, have enable the development of a competitive and profitable horticultural sector. The area of Salnés, is without any doubt, one of the most active in this sense, with several horticultural nurseries offering a wide range of different crops. However, the environmental conditions of the area are also favourable for the development of pathogens and pests. Traditionally, the control of these pests had been carried out using pesticides, given their high effectiveness against them; however, populations have become more resistant to these products, due to frequent applications, and the highest rates applied. In addition, nowadays consumers demand higher quality and less persistent and toxic vegetables, thus natural control methods are preferred. In the present work, the first survey on beneficial organisms on horticultural crops in Galicia was carried out with the aim of detecting the organisms naturally occurring in these vegetables, and to determine the species more adapted to the area, so as to develop integrated control programmes. |
