ABSTRACT:     One of the best methods of sewage sludge disposal is to recycle it by fertilizing agricultural land. However, its use entails some environmental risks like nitrate leaching. After the addition of seven application rates of sewage sludge (5-100 T/Ha) and two application rates of chemical fertilizer to two acid soils, the NH4+ and NO3- in the soil and the leachate were studied for six weeks. In one of the soils a high level of NH4+ and NO3- leaching was observed in the first irrigation. The second studied soil showed a progressive release throughout the second and subsequent irrigations. Soil mineralization speed has been key in obtaining massive losses or retentions of nitrogen. Before applying a fertilizer, it is necessary to know the characteristics of the climate, the soil and the fertilizer.
