ABSTRACT: The first report of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner et Buhrer) Nickle in Europe in 1999, made European Union countries to carry out systematic surveys, to determine the occurrence of this nematode and its vector Monochamus galloprovincialis Olivier.
In Galicia, due to the continuous wood importations from Portugal, the survey was even more exhaustive. In this region, 3633 wood samples were analyzed, from 1999 to 2007, collected in conifer stands both asymptomatic and symptomatic, sawmills and wood factories.
To determine the occurence of.its insect vector, window traps were placed in the four Galician provinces.
Bursaphelenchus xylophilus was not detected, but other species from the same genus were found in our area: B. mucronatus Mamiya et Enda, B. sexdentati Rühm, B. eggersi Rühm and B. hylobianum (Korenchenko) Hunt.
Monochamus galloprovincialis was detected in Ourense and Pontevedra provinces..
In the present work the morphological and morphometric features of these nematodes and its vector are studied as well as their distribution in our region.
