ABSTRACT:Pathogenic species of the genus Armillaria cause white root rot in several woody species. In the present work, Armillaria species affecting a wide range of woody ornamentals in Galicia (north-western Spain) were identified. Fungal diagnosis was done from symptomatic root and collar root samples by PCR/RFLP or from soil surrounding the roots using nested-PCR/RFLP. Armillaria species were identified by sequencing DNA fungal fragments. Results showed that the species more frequently found causing white root rot in Galicia was A. mellea, being detected in 74% of the plant samples and in 92% of soil samples. In a lower rate, A. gallica was identified in 23% of plant samples and 6% of soil samples. A single root sample was affected by A. cepistipes. Armillaria mellea was detected in 46 ornamental species cultivated in Galicia, which points out the polyphagous character of the pathogen. Key words: root rot, diagnosis, molecular techniques |
