ABSTRACT:Pinching techniques have been traditionally applied in the production of ornamental woody plants, but so far scientific studies have not been performed on their use and effect on Camellia japonica cultivars. On the other hand, the application of pinching techniques in ornamental plant commercial nurseries is time and man power consuming, thus nurseryman started to focus their attention on growth regulators. In this work, the effects of pinching and the use of a plant regulator chlormequat in the development and blooming period of three C. japonica cultivars growing in pots in a commercial plantation was studied. Chrlormequat was efficient in reducing plant height and increase branching only in two of the cultivars studied, which point outs the need to further study the effects of growth retardants at a cultivar and not species level.
