FIRST REPORT OF Cylindrocladium buxicola
Henricot IN GALICIA.
Cylindrocladium
buxicola, included until November 2008 in the EPPO Alert List (European
Plant Protection Organization), can cause an important foliar disease affecting
several species of Buxus, being Buxus sempervirens cv.
Suffruticosa highly sensitive to the disease. The fungus had been
previously detected in several European countries and in New Zealand, but it
had not been reported in our country. In Spain it was first detected in Galicia
in November 2008 on nursery plants of Buxus spp. growing in pots and received
at our laboratory (EFA). So far it was not
detected in box plants growing in Galician gardens.
Diseased plants showed dark brown to black spots on the
leaves and black streaks on the stems. In case of severe attacks, plants
present a strong defoliation. On foliar spots and on twigs we can observe
fungal branched conidiophores carrying the cylindrical conidia of the genus.
Identification of the species was based on morphological and molecular
techniques following the taxonomic description made by Henricot and Culham in
2002.
